<p>A size grading machine for carrots and similar, conically tapered vegetables comprises several rotary screening reels in succession, the annular screen of each reel being made up of spaced, parallel, longitudinal rods. The gaps between the rods is greater each successive reel. On a rising arc of each reel, and on a centr3-line at about 45 deg. to the horizontal which extends through the horizontal axis of the reel, is the horizontal axis of rotation of a circular brush. The brush is outside the screening rods and its flexible bristles are tangential to the screen surface. The brush rotates in the opposite direction to the reel with a bristle tip speed slightly in excess of the exterior surface speed of the reel. The machine is for sorting carrots etc. into several size ranges. Tapered vegetables such as carrots tend to become jammed between reel rods. The brushes push these carrots back into the reel for sorting. A single reel can be removed and replaced without disturbing adjacent reels.</p> |
