<p>A top-loading automatic washing machine having a low-speed motor for the washing phase and a high-speed motor for the spin-dry phase of operation has a braking system operated by a pair of cams affixed to the axle of the machine lid which actuate a pair of microswitches in the control circuit when the lid is opened whilst the machine is spinning. The initial movement of the lid operates the first switch, which disconnects the high-speed motor and connects in the low-speed motor, which is not, however, linked to the power supply, and thus exerts a braking effect on the spinning drum. As the lid approaches the fully-open position, the second switch is operated to interrupt the power supply to the machine.</p> |
