In a measuring instrument which is used, in particular, to measure lengths or angles, provision is made of a scale (3) and a scanning unit (5) which can be adjusted along this scale and generates measuring signals when adjusted. In order to avoid troublesome supply leads or the otherwise necessary replacement of batteries, the supply of electricity to the scanning unit is provided as a small generator (8) which can be driven during the adjustment by the adjustable part of the measuring instrument. <IMAGE>
