A treatment barrel, which may be bell-shaped, is located on a frame so the barrel can be rotated or vibrated. The barrel has a removable lid mounted on a rotating holder so that the lid may either be clamped on the barrel or moved away from the latter to create a small gap between the lid and the barrel. The small gap is pref. 1-10 mm wide. The lid may also be moved a long distance away from the barrel. Pref. the barrel is located on a frame mounted on a pair of pivot shafts, which carry a second, inner frame. On the inner frame is a slide moved towards or away from the barrel by a handwheel; the slide carries the rotating holder for the lid. Used for the wet or dry rumbling of workpieces with abrasives or sawdust etc. for deburring and/or to obtain a smooth finish. With large barrels, the lid can weigh over 20 kg, and formerly had to be replaced by a perforated lid. The invention provides a small gap so air etc. can be sucked into the barrel, or a solid lid can be moved slightly away from a perforated lid located in the barrel.
