Non-metallic moulding with metal coating - where mould surface is sprayed with metal, and then mould is filled with non-metallic material such as polymer

The inner surface of a mould is first coated by spraying with a layer of metal, followed by filling the mould with a nonmetallic material by injection or casting. The metal coating is pref. applied by a spraying pistol, and is used esp. on only part of the inner surface of a mould, esp. to form a frame round a moulding coated with metal. The metal may also be sprayed onto a core and then covered with a nonmetallic material; after removing the core, the prod. is an antifriction bearing with an internal layer of metal. Used esp. to make pictures with a monolithic frame, where the moulding and frame are made of a polymer; but also for mfg. industrial components. A simple process, where thick metal coatings can be obtd. The metal coatings may be used as electric contacts.
