A one-step permanent waving compsn. (A) comprises (a) as main component a (hydrogen)sulphide or mercapto cpd. (I); (b) an accelerator for air oxidn.; (c) at least alkali to give pH 8-11; (e) an aq. carrier for all the components. Pref. (I) is an alkali metal or ammonium (hydrogen)sulphide or thioglycolate; (II) is an alkali metal or ammonium sulphite; and component (b) is at least one of hexamethylene tetramine, iodine, bromine, or alkali metal or ammonium bromide or iodide. The compsn. can also include an aliphatic hydroxycarboxylic acid; satd. alkanol; amine, and at least one of sucrose, glucose and fructose. The proportion of malodorous (I) needed and no HCN is evolved. The waving treatment is completed in a shorter time, and can be carried out immediately after dyeing the hair without adverse effect on the colour.
