The grinding belt (1) for grinding a workpiece (4) moves over an abrasive pad (9) which, together with the abrasive pad carrier (10) and a guide piece (15) located therebetween, is designed as a hollow body. Air is pressed into the abrasive pad carrier (10) by a blower (11), said air flowing, via outlets (14) and through through-passages, into individual chambers (21a-n) of the abrasive pad (9). The air escapes therefrom via appertaining openings (20a-n) in order to form an air cushion which presses the grinding belt (1) against the workpiece (4). In order that said air cushion, despite the individual chambers, is continuous, the intermediate walls (22) between said chambers are not guided right up to to the upper edge (23) of the abrasive pad. The abrasive pad carrier (10) can be vertically adjusted by means of devices (32) in order to be able to adapt the abrasive pad (9) to different conditions. By means of the air cushion, the circulating grinding belt (1) is lifted from the stationary abrasive pad (9) and pressed, virtually with uniform pressure, onto the workpiece (4). Owing to the lack of friction between abrasive pad (9) and grinding belt (1), uniform grinding is achieved. <IMAGE>
