Stud for arc stud welding processes - where head of stud has conical or domed tip employed to centre the electric arc

A stud is welded to another metal workpiece by an electric arc obtd. by discharging a capacitor. The stud has a head; and the end surface of the head is provided with a profiled ring recess which surrounded a conical or domed tip projecting outwards on the axis of the stud. The tip centres the electric arc between the stud and the metal workpiece. The stud pref. also has an outer rim of uniform height, which surrounds the ring recess. The tip is pref. used to make an initial electric contact with the workpiece, and is then moved away from the latter so the arc forms at the centre of the stud. Provides automatic centering of the arc, so strong welds are obtd. The profiled head on the stud can be easily made when mfg. the studs from wire on cold heading machines.
