Recrystallization of activated rare-earth oxyhalide phosphors.

A method for the recrystallization of an activated rare-earth oxyhalide phosphor is disclosed. The method comprises recystallizing the phosphor by firing a uniform mixture of the finely divided phosphor and flux in an inert atmosphere. The flux contains a magnesium halide from which more than the readily removable water has been removed. One particularly preferred phosphor made by the method is a lanthanum oxychloride phosphor coactivated with bismuth and ytterbium. This phosphor made by the present method had high speed and low afterglow.
