Semi-completed products are thermoformed as follows: (a) the product is positioned and fixed on a workplate, leaving free, the region to be formed, (b) the product is heated locally in this region, which includes one of its ends, (c) the hot region is formed around a tool and reconsolidated under pressure, (d) it is cooled, and (e) the formed product is then released from the fixtures. Also claimed are: (1) use in the vehicle industry to make parts for frames and crash- or impact-absorbing structures; and (2) suitable appts. to carry out the process, substantially as described. Pref. in accordance with the degree of deformation, layers of the heated region are allowed to slide relative to each other, leaving a stepped appearance in the end layer, beyond the articulation. Heating takes place from one or more localised sources, which may be on the deforming tool and directed to the region of deformation. A swinging cheek is used for the purpose. This is dimensionally stable and thermally conductive over the entire temperature range of the manipulation.
