PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a film thickness controlling method by which the film thickness can be controlled highly precisely in the case coating is continuously carried out on a strip-like material, e.g. cold rolled steel sheet by a roll coater type coating apparatus. SOLUTION: As for a roll coater type coating apparatus, the thickness of a film to be formed is controlled based on a model expression to derive the thickness of a film on a strip-like material from an index (μUm L/E) obtained by combination of the viscosityμof a coating material, average circumferential speed Um of a pick-up roll and an applicator roll, and the thickness L and the coefficient E of elasticity of an elastic material on the applicator roll, a pushing degree between the pick up roll and the applicator roll, and the ratio of the circumferential speed of the pick up roll and the applicator roll.
