PURPOSE:To prevent an increase in the chlorate content of brine by reacting circulating brine with hydrogen in the presence of catalyst when the brine is electrolyzed by an ion exchange membrane method. CONSTITUTION:When brine contg. NaCl is electrolyzed in an electrolytic cell using an ion exchange membrane to manufacrure gaseous chlorine and NaOH, chlorate NaClO3 is gradually accumulated in circulating brine. The accumulation of chlorate reduces the concn. of NaCl in the anodic chamber, and the amount of chlorate ions diffusing and penetrating into the cathodic chamber through the cation exchange membrane exceeds a negligible amount. This circulating brine contg. chlorate is branched by 2-30% and reacted with gaseous hydrogen or a hydrogen-contg. gas in the presence of a VIII group metal in the periodic table such as Fe, Ni, Co, Pt, Ru, Pd, Rh or Ir and its oxide as catalyst to decompose the NaClO3 into NaCl and water. The bine is then returned to the circulating brine. Thus, the accumulation of chlorate is prevented. |
