A paper strip (3) is guided by rollers (5) to pass through a washing tank (1) containing processing water (2). The water is introduced by a feed pipe (6) from hot (10) and cold (11) water pipes via a mixer (9). A controller connected to a temperature probe (13) on the hot pipe transmits a signal to a regulator (12) at the mixer to maintain a constant temp. An impurity measuring probe (14) in the tank is connected to a feed controller (15) which operates a valve (16) in the water supply pipe. This ensures that the impurity concentration is maintained constant. A level sensor (20) ensures that the drain valve (18) is opened or closed to maintain a constant level.
