In a multi-stage extrusion process, the material passes through ancillary thermal and mechanical treatment between a screw plasticisation unit and the profile output die, particularly involving another extruder and opt. passages in which other treatments such as filtration or devolatilisation occur. Used for processing a variety of thermoplastic materials, use of separate extrusion units and intermediate passages with opt. separate temp. or pressure control is simpler to construct and more versatile than single or multiple screw systems having long overall screw and barrel components with their greater thermal inertia.
