<p>Appts. for sucking up and collecting oil floating on open water, such as the sea, consists of a number of long, vertical vessels, each mounted on a float; the water and oil together are sucked into the vessel, separate out there due to their differing densities, into oil and water; the water is sucked up by means of a pump inside the vessel. Pref. the oil-water mixt. is drawn in through openings near the surface by suction pumps mounted in the float; this process continues until the oil-water mixt. reaches the top or a limit switch, which shuts down the pumps.</p> |
