The drive mechanism is contained inside a cylindrical drum. A spiral disc (12) is fitted eccentrically onto the shaft (1) which runs centrally through the drum. A steel band (13) clamps round the outside of the disc. A spiral spring (16) is fixed at one end and clamped to the steel band (13) by grips (15) at carefully determined points along its length. Tension wires (25) run from the end (18) of the spring (16) over pins (24) fixed on the inside of the end discs of the drum to a fixing (17) on the spiral disc. The clamps and pins are positioned so that the spring forces have a resultant moment about the shaft. Specification printed 25.2.82.
