A description is given of an automatic clearance compensation device for drum brakes, in which a motion transmission element or a setting element forming part of this device is manufactured from a shape-memory or thermally deformable alloy. If an excessive amount of heat is generated during a braking operation, the motion transmission or setting element deforms to a predetermined configuration, releasing the engagement between this element and other components and ending the automatic clearance compensation process. In this way, it is possible to prevent overcompensation by the clearance compensation device in the case of excessive heating of the brakes.
