PURPOSE:To manufacture abrasive grains with superior durability and superior bonding, adhering and grinding properties by irradiating grains of a metallic simple substance or a rare earth element with energy beams in a prescribed atmosphere while controlling the pressure. CONSTITUTION:Grains 7 of a metallic simple substance or a rare earth element are fed to a reactor 4 in a reaction chamber 1 from a hopper 5 through a leading pipe 15, and after actuating a vacuum pump 8 to evacuate the chamber 1, a gas forming carbide, nitride or boride is fed to the chamber 1 from a cylinder 6 to prepare a prescribed atmosphere. A motor 9 provided with a speed change or reduction gear is then actuated to rotate the reactor 4 through a supporting and rotating shaft 19, and simultaneously the grains 7 are irradiated with energy beams 13 of laser through a prism 3, whereby the grains 7 react with the atmosphere 11 to form carbide, nitride or boride of the grains 7 with a prescribed degree of reaction. |
