PURPOSE:To prevent any damage to the separator of a silver-oxide battery, and increase the discharge capacity of the battery by forming a given manganese dioxide layer containing metal silver between the separator and a silver-oxide positive electrode containing a given amount of manganese dioxide. CONSTITUTION:A manganese dioxide layer 4 which contains metal silver powder and has a larger porosity than a molded silver-oxide positive electrode 2 containing 5-50wt% of manganese dioxide, is formed between a separator 3 and the molded body 2. After that, an electrolyte holding material 5 and a gel-like negative electrode 6 made of zinc are placed over the separator 3, thereby a battery being constituted. Owing to the above constitution, as the discharge of the battery proceeds, the volume expansion of the molded body 2 which is due to the expansion of the manganese dioxide is compensated and prevented by the volume reduction of the silver oxide, and the deterioration of the separator 3 is prevented by the decrease in the oxidizing ability of the molded body 2. Besides, the layer 4 facilitates the reaction inside the body 2 during the initial and the middle stage of the discharge, increase the utilization rate of the active material during the last stage of the discharge, and prevents metal silver and silver ions from shifting toward the negative electrode 6. Consequently, the discharge capacity of the battery is increased. |
