A machine tool has a spindle head(5) movable in a first direction. A rotatable tool magazine(10) has several holders(11) for tools. The magazine is movable in a second direction at right angles to the first to allow any tool to be supplied to the head spindle or an empty holder to be supplied to a tool(7) secured to the spindle(6). A tool release portion is operated by movement of the spindle to release a tool when the head is moved away from the magazine. The magazine is movable in the first direction with the head until the release portion has operated to release a tool which is engaged with a holder.
