The invention relates to a wear- and friction reducing layer deposited on a substrate in a way to adhere to such substrate. Said layer contains the elements boron, carbon and hydrogen. According to a method for producing a wear- and friction reducing layer, said layer is deposited on a substrate in a chemical vapour deposition process, in which a treatment gas containing hydrogen is fed. In the case of a substrate with such a layer, said layer is composed of an inorganic wear- and friction reducing compound based on boron, hydrocarbon and hydrogen.
