The power guillotine uses a fixed horizontal slide (3)-buttress and has a rear slide-stop (11) which aautomatically pivots down on impact. Runners transmit horizontal slide (3) loads to the buttress. The stop spans between sub-slides (12) on fixed horizontal rails (9) to each flank. Cantilevered stub axles (10) mount the stop extremities on the sub-slides and constitute the stop-fulcrum, the stop geometry ensuring that it pivots back to the horizontal under a self-weight restoring moment. A tapered plate (19) may attach (23,25) to the rear face of the slide (3), leading the descent to effect the contact with the stop. An adjustable stud (16) may contact the nib (15) to set the repose position of the stop (11), and the contact zones (18,19) may be of toughened shock-resistant steel.
