Aq. solids are treated to recover clean water and dry solids by mixing with low viscosity, volatile, water-immiscible light fluidising oil having b.pt. 150-550 deg.F to obtain a mixt. which will remain fluid and pumpable after removal of the water content. This mixt. is dehydrated by heat evapn. to vaporise all the water and part of the fluidising oil and produce a mixed water and oil vapour and an oil slurry contg. anhydrous solids. Mixed water and oil vapour is condensed and the condensate sepd. to produce a clean water fraction and a light oil fraction. Fluidising oil is sepd. from the slurry and the remaining solids brought into direct contact with blowing steam to remove any residual oil from the solids by heat evapn. Used in recovering water and solids from dispersions of powdered coal, food and pharmaceuticals prods. sewage sludge and black liquors from the paper industry.
