The radiographic film cassette (1) is mounted in a carriage (2) which is movable on a cylindrical rod (2) and rail (3) using lubricated runners (4). The carriage has a chassis (5), which carries the retaining mechanism for the cassette, and perpendicular to which is a drawer assembly (8) which slides on the rod and rail. Movement of the drawer clamps or releases the cassette. A motor (18) driven belt (12) provides drive action when the cassette is initially introduced via the input slot (15). Detectors (30,31) signal entry and end of cassette travel. The detectors (30,31) initiate and stop a pulse counter which feeds a counter to determine the amount of rotation of the drive motor.
