<p>The coupling element comprises two fibre-carrying portions, a clamping part (3) and a spring member forcing the parts together. Each fibre-carrying portion has a groove in its upper surface for supporting an optical fibre. The grooves have tapered entrances for receiving fibres. Each fibre in situ contacts respective prismatic grooves in the clamping portion. A narrow central groove portion links the prisms. The upper clamping part has a surface shaped to conform to the carrying portions upon which it is mounted. The spring portion is bolted to the reverse side of the clamping part and is wrapped around to the front side so as to urge the clamp and carrying portions together in a resilient manner.</p> |
