A dry coating materila for paper to be adhered esp. for the reverse side of wall paper comprises 100 pts.wt. water soluble, adhesive cellulose ether and/or starch ether or its degradation prod., 1-40 pts.wt. hydrocolloid (I) which produces a (practically) non-tacky highly viscous aq. soln., 10-50 pts.wt. water soluble and/or dispersible separating agent (II), 50-300 pts.wt. water soluble and/or -dispersible filler (III) and opt. other additives and preservatives. The cellulose ether is pref. hydroxyethyl cellulose, methylhydroxy alkyl cellulose and/or CMC. (I) is polyacrylamide with a mol.wt. of 500000-10 power 7, an alkali alginate and/or galactomannan. (II) is pref. alkali(ne earth) metal soaps, Al soaps, Al silicates and/or silica. (III) is starch and/or urea. The compsn. is applied as a 10-30% soln. or dispersion. The adhesive adheres well to the paper so that it swells rapidly when wetted with water but does not wash out. The wetted adhesive adheres well but the dried paper can still be easily removed.
