Provision is made for safety on self-propelled compacting rollers, fitted with a guiding handle and operated with personnel walking beside them, with an adjustable hydraulic pump with drive. A roller drum (10) has an additional position-fixing brake (50) fitted to it. This brake is regulated in the draw direction by the sensor (54), on letting go of the guiding handle (44), via delaying mechanisms (83). It may be pre-loaded by mechanical means in this direction, and held in the vented setting by a setting member influenced by hydraulic auxiliary pressure, the member being switched off via a sensor-controlled valve (60) when the handle is relinquished, and switched on by a throttle (83). Wear on the fixing brake can be reduced to a minimum.
