Fine powder made from titanium or its alloys - where embrittled and crushed scrap is driven by inert gas stream against impact plate

Parent patent describes the mfr. of powder, esp. from coarse Ti scrap with a low oxygen content. The initial material is treated with H2 so it becomes very brittle; it is then crushed in a mill or breaker, pref. to a size below 10 mm, esp. below 6 mm. The crushed material is driven by a gas stream against an impact plate, or against another gas stream contg. the crushed material to obtain powder. The powder obtd.is heated, pref. above 450 deg.C., and esp. above 700 deg.C- in a vacuum harder than 0.1 torr so it becomes ductile. The pref. mfg. plant includes a chamber with a venturi nozzle employed to drive the crushed material against an impact plate to make the powder. Used esp. where the powder is made into compacts by cold isostatic pressing. The compacts are used to make components employed in pumps, fans, aircraft, or in the chemical industry.
