In order to obtain a stable combustion with a pulverised coal burner, using a flame which is maintained over the entire duration of the combustion, while the proportions of the resulting NO, CO and unburned carbon are substantially reduced, the following are provided: a first pipe (1) for admission of pulverised coal and a primary air stream into a furnace; a flame guide plate (7) arranged at the front end of the first pipe (1) and widening outwards therefrom; a second pipe (3) arranged outside the first pipe (1) and concentric thereto, the second pipe (3) being axially movable for the purpose of adjusting the space between its front end and the flame guide plate (7); and a burner pipe which is arranged outside the second pipe (3) and concentric thereto, the burner pipe having the shape of a diffuser and widening outwards at its front end area. <IMAGE>
