<p>A novel catalytic converter is disclosed wherein the anisotropic stiffness of the converter container or can [100] is accounted for in dimensioning a substrate-resilient means assembly [200, 202] which, when assembled into the can, will differentially interfere with the can interior. This differential interference is selected so that compressive forces exerted by the can on the substrate do not exceed the effective uniaxial crushing strengths of the substrate, thereby preventing shear-type failure due to localized bending.</p> |
