<p>PURPOSE:To obtain the titled substance rich in m- and p- substitution products, simply without problems of corrosion of apparatuses and pollution, by reacting biphenyl with a lower olefin in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. silica -alumina or zeolite, under given conditions. CONSTITUTION:One mole biphenyl is reacted with 0.5-5mol lower olefin in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. silica-alumina or zeolite, at 180 deg.C or above, to give an alkylbiphenyl rich in the m- and p- substitution products. The silica-alumina catalyst has an alumina content of 10-30wt%, and the zeolite catalyst is any of the natural or synthetic ones and may be used alone or in a mixture. The particle diameter of the catalyst is most preferably 20-150mu, and the catalyst is activated by calcining in the air at 400-850 deg.C. The amount of the catalyst is 0.5-10wt%, preferably 1-5wt%, based on the biphenyl. USE:An electrical insulating oil, a solvent for pressure-sensitive paper and a heating medium oil.</p> |
