Acetic anhydride is reacted with hydrogen to produce ethylidene diacetate with high yield and with ratios of ethylidene diacetate and co- product acetic acid near the theoretical by carrying out the reaction in the presence of a catalyst consisting essentially of palladium, ruthenium and/or rhodium in the substantial absence of carbon monoxide.
