<p>This invention comprises a process for the halogenation of carboxylic acids, acid anhydrides and acid halides (all these compounds being referred to below as "carboxylate compounds") which have at least one reactive alpha hydrogen substituent, which comprises placing the said carboxylate compound in contact with a halogen (especially chlorine) or source of halogen in the presence of an effective quantity of a cyanoquinone compound and an auxiliary agent of an acid nature as described in greater detail below in this description. This invention also comprises, as a material composition, a mixture comprising the cyanoquinone material and the auxiliary agent of an acid nature. The invention also comprises, as a material composition, a halogenation reagent which comprises a halogen (especially chlorine) or source of halogen and the aforesaid mixture of cyanoquinone material and auxiliary agent. The material compositions above are especially suitable for the halogenation, especially the chlorination, of carboxylate compounds.
