PURPOSE:To prepare a glass block suitable for optical use in high yield, by hydrolyzing Si(OCH3)4 with water of adjusted pH, and heat-treating the resultant porous silica gel material. CONSTITUTION:A raw material Si(OCH3)4 is hydrolyzed with water of pH adjusted to 9.5-11.5 with NH3, etc. to prepare a porous easily sinterable silica gel material. The resultant silica gel material is then heat-treated in an oxidizing gas atmosphere, an atmosphere containing chlorine or vacuum or He atmosphere and vitrified. According to the method, a massive glass of high silica content for optical use can be obtained readily. |
