A thermal transfer roller (10) includes a first end chamber (28) in communication with a source of thermal transfer fluid, an annulus (16) for receiving the fluid and facilitating thermal transfer to a substrate, and a second end chamber (38) in communication with the annulus (16) for receiving the spent thermal transfer fluid. At least one end chamber (28, 38) includes a plurality of channels (46), each channel (46) having a wider end approaching the annulus (16) and a narrower end away from the annulus (16). Preferably, the channels (46) are present in both end chambers (28, 38). The channels (46) substantially reduce angular flow of the fluid caused by rotation of the roller (10), and help stabilize and maintain desired fluid volumes flowing through the roller (10) as its velocity is increased.
