Reaction of a compound of the formula <IMAGE> in which either both R1 and R2 are methyl groups or one of the radicals R1 and R2 is a methyl group and the other is a hydrogen atom, with an oxidising agent results, in the case where R1 and R2 are methyl groups, in removal of the methyl group on the N atom in the 3'' position or both methyl groups and, in the case where one of the radicals R1 and R2 is a methyl group and the other is a hydrogen atom, in removal of the methyl group, resulting in the corresponding demethylgentamicin derivatives. The prepared antibiotics have a broad spectrum of antibacterial action and very low toxicity. |
