A sheath having several parallel tubular pockets for receiving the anodes of a lead battery is made from four layers of woven fabric which are secured together during wearing by an interlaced weft yarn at spaced intervals whereby to form the pockets which each have an inner wall and an outer wall. The fabric forming the inner wall, has a weft of chemically resistant glass fibre yarn and a warp of synthetic yarn resistant to dilute sulphuric acid and oxidation whilst the fabric forming the outer wall has a warp of similarly resistant, synthetic yarn and a weft of glass fibre or synthetic yarn. The fabric forming the inner walls has a larger number of weft than warp yarns, and the sheath is stiffened by a coating of thermo-setting resin. The sheath can be made easily and cheaply with pockets of an accurate pre-determined size. Pref. each end of the sheath has a flap formed by a portion of a pocket and the flap is rendered impermeable by an inert insulating material.
|
