Method of producing a diamond type matl. comprises compressing a reaction chamber contg. material forming a diamond nucleus and a second matl. forming a source of carbon opt. contg. an impurity for colouring the diamond to be formed by growth, sepd. by a mass of catalyst-solvent matl. opt. contg. a colouring impurity for the diamond, to a pressure in the diamond stable region of the carbon phase diagram, heating the reaction chamber such that the nucleus reaches a temp. close to the min. tem. of the stable region while the carbon source reaches the max. temp. in the stability range. The process is characterised in that the growth of diamond (a) on the nucleus so that the catalyst-solvent is satd. with carbon, (b) in the neighbourhood of the diamond, (c) in a combination of these localities in such a way that the diamond, the nucleus and the catalyst solvent interfere with one another, is inhibited by suppression of spontaneous nucleation close to the nucleus while allowing growth of the diamonds along a predetermined path.
|
