<p>An appts. for exchange of material between two fluids comprises a housing enclosing a bundle of hollow fibres with permeable walls and means for passing the first fluid through the housing over the outer surfaces of the fibres whilst the other fluid flows through the internal passages in the fibres. The novelty lies in the fact that the housing has a number of wall sections next to the bundle of fibres which are so shaped that they form enlargements in the cross-sectional of the housing and cause the first fluid to flow transversely across the bundle of fibres. The appts. is used in artificial kidney and lung machines, for desalination of water, thickening of fruit juices, removal of sediment from beet etc. By forcing the first fluid to flow transversely across the fibres, good mass transfer is achieved by the high velocities and boundary layer disturbance in the centre as well as the outer parts of the bundle.</p> |
