PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL element with a cathode thinner than usual of which, short-circuiting or the like can be easily repaired, and to provide a manufacturing method of an organic EL element repairing short-circuiting and the like in advance sufficiently. SOLUTION: The surface of a short-circuited part of a cathode 7 made of metal like aluminum or the like, is made easy to oxidize, by making the thickness of the cathode so thin as 700-1,000Å, especially 700-900Å. The organic EL element is manufactured by making the thickness of the cathode 300-1,000Å, especially 300-700Å, and making the short-circuited part generate heat and oxidize by impressing higher voltage than that at the constant current operation under the nitrogen gas atmosphere including 1-5 volume %, especially 1-2 volume % of oxygen gas, and sealing under the atmosphere of nitrogen including small quantity of oxygen afterward. Further, when the thickness of the cathode is less than 800Å, especially less than 700Å, it is preferable to put the cathode with required sheet resistance to practical use, by forming additive cathode on the above surface to make total thickness 1,200-1,800Å, especially 1,300-1,700Å.
