The pistons (1) are linked by a rod (2) with a toothed portion (3) around its mid-length. Two coaxially stepped gearwheels (7,8) permanently mesh with opposite sides of a central pinion driving a shaft, with their larger-dia. elements (9). Their smaller-dia. elements are half plain (10), half toothed (11), radius (r) of the plain half are less than or equal to the tooth root (13) radius. The toothed halves alternately engage the teeth on the rod which extend over a length (m) roughly equalling the toothed-half circumference.
