The roll taking down carriage (5) has a chassis (8) with travelling rollers (9) moving on rails in the direction parallel to the axes of rolls to be changed. The frame is fitted with roll carrier (10) containing two clamping sockets (6). The roll carrier (10) is jointed to the chassis (8) by lower pair of link arms (11) and upper pair of link arms (12) forming a link arm parallelogram by which the roll carrier (10) can be moved in parallel planes. The chassis (8) and the roll carrier are fitted with power cylinders (13) producing lifting and lowering movement of the roll carrier (10) together with clamping sockets (6). By making the upper pair of link arms (12) shorter than the lower pair of link arms (11) the possibility is created to combine the lifting, or lowering movement with a tipping movement of the roll carrier.
