PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin-film magnetic head capable of achieving a high speed for recording while securing an overwriting characteristic, and its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: A gap space 16 is provided in a lower magnetic pole 50 (lower magnetic layer 11), and an embedded steplike portion 20 for deciding a throat height TH as a part of an insulator 35 is embedded in this space 16. Even when the disposing area of the embedded steplike portion 20 is expanded forward to reduce the throat height TH, the magnetic flux containing capacity of an upper pole tip 26 constituting the propagation path of a main magnetic flux is not reduced during recording. Thus, the magnetic flux is smoothly propagated in the upper pole tip 26 to sufficiently reach an air bearing surface 38. Thus, the throat height TH is reduced and, at the same time, an overwriting characteristic is secured. |
