2,2-Dimethylpenam-3-carboxylic acid 1,1-dioxide compounds of the formula <IMAGE> in which R1 represents hydroxy or etherified or esterified hydroxy, and R2 represents carboxyl or protected carboxyl, and salts of such compounds having a salt-forming group have beta - lactamase-inhibiting properties.
