A refrigerant passage (90) is formed in the cylinder block between two adjacent cylinders (32) and is adapted to pass refrigerant flow therethrough while separating oil therefrom by heat from the cylinder walls prior to compression in the cylinders. An oil catch basin (164) also formed in the cylinder block catches a portion of the separated oil and directs same first to the journal bearing (50) from which it is then delivered along the shaft to the thrust bearing (52) where it is then eventually centrifuged outwardly therethrough and onto the swash plate (41). The basin retains a portion of the oil caught therein during compressor operation for use after each intermittent stop in the operation of the compressor so that oil is immediately available to be delivered to the bearings in the same sequence each time compressor operation is restarted.
