PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steel plate shell segment and a shield excavation method capable of simplifying an earth pressure load supporting method, facilitating assembly and conveyance of a segment, and reducing an amount of excavated soil. SOLUTION: On the inside face of a shell-shaped base segment formed of a steel plate and used for lining of a tunnel bottom part, a pair of left and right vertical rib members, which is provided with strength rigidity bearable with the earth pressure load and applicable as a pair of left and right rail members for traveling left and right traveling wheels 45 of a rear carriage 10 in a shield machine 1, and a pair of horizontal rib members connecting the front and rear ends of the vertical rib members together arranged, so that the earth pressure load can be transmitted to a base segment 28A by effectively using the rear carriage 10 to be supported by the vertical rib members.
