NEW MATERIAL:A compound of the formula [R1 is CH3 or H; R2 is 4C straight chain (un)saturated alkyl having a CH3 group at the gamma-position or further 1-2 double bonds; however, R2 represents alkyl having two double bonds among those described above when R1 is H]. EXAMPLE:3-Methyl-5-(3-methyl-1,3-butadien-1-yl)-tetrahydrofuran. USE:A perfume having an aroma or odor like that of a fruit, rose, vanilla or new straw mat. PROCESS:A mixture of 2,7-dimethyl-4-hydroxy-5,7-octadienoic acid lactone with THF is dropped to a container containing lithium aluminum hydride and THF to give 2,7-dimethyl-4-hydroxyl-5,7-octadien-1-ol, which is then dropped to p-toluenesulfonyl chloride and pyridine to afford the exemplified compound. |
