A clamping arrangement for an elongated part (15) which extends between two opposite, parallel walls (11). The mechanism contains a multiplicity of displaceable elements (35) which are held in a uniformly stacked arrangement inside a cage (37). The displaceable elements alternately touch a metallic strip (61) on the elongated part (15) and an inner surface of a housing (51). A lever (45) which is supported on the elongated part such that it can pivot results (if it is operated in one direction) in a pressure being exerted on the outermost one of the displaceable elements, which pressure is transmitted to all the elements. The elements in consequence carry out a relative sliding movement and produce equal and opposite compression forces on the inner surface of the housing and on the elongated part, the elongated part being pressed into intimate contact with one of the walls. Operation of the lever in the opposite direction results in the elongated part being released. <IMAGE>
