PURPOSE:To obtain a face light emitting device having an extremely small amount of current consumption, by forming selectively the driving electrode of an electroluminescence (EL) device in correspondence to the display pattern part of an electron optical display device. CONSTITUTION:When the illumination switch 5a is off, the EL driving circuit 15 is inactive. And the EL plate 3 does not emit light and functions as an ordinary reflecting plate. The EL plate 3 is coated with the EL material over its entire surface substantially and thus presents a yellowish green color over the entire surface of the display part 2. When the switch 5a is turned on in a dark place, the circuit 15 works. As a result, a high voltage boosted by the output terminals Q1 and Q2 of circuit 15 is applied to the area between the common electrode and the transparent electrode 3a of the EL plate 3. The area of the electrode 3a has a light emission to ensure a beautiful illumination for both the hour and minute areas of the display part 2. In such way, the current consumption can be reduced to increase the illuminating efficiency. |
