<p>A support for a workpiece, in which a hole is to be machined by an energy beam, consists of grains (or particles) binded together by a binder which is evaporated by the beam and partially transforms into a liquid after machining. The grains absorb heat and vapours when contacted by the beam. The compsn. of the support is chosen to ensure absorption of the beam and creation of an amt. of gas sufficient to expel molten metal from the hole and reduce formation of burrs and resolidified layers in the hole. The support is useful in the electron beam machining of holes, slots, etc. in (non)metallic workpieces, e.g. to form a hole in one wall of a hollow gas turbine engine blade.</p> |
